How do I make money with Internet Marketing?

This is a question that is appearing in our forums a lot recently and to avoid repeating myself, I will do a post about it.

Quoting the Oxford Dictionary:

Marketing
the promotion and selling of products or services.

The question by itself is a lazy question and doesn’t provide the necessarily information that is required to allow a proper reply from people that wants to help. Some of the things you need to consider and point out if you are asking this question are:

  • What are your skill sets?
  • How much time are you planning to devote to making money via Internet Marketing?
  • Do you have any areas of expertise in a subject or niche?
  • How much money or resources can you spend on your ventures?
  • What is your current knowledge of Internet marketing?
  • Do you own the product or Service you are marketing?

Has your Adsense revenue dropped?

I suppose most webmasters have seen their Adsense earnings drop in the last couple of days.

Google has changed their ads so that only the title and URL are clickable and many webmasters are reporting lower CTR. Personally I see this as a move in the right direction as it means less accidental clicks and advertisers getting more for their money.

Comparing my stats I think I am down around 20-30USD a day. Its not too worrying as I decided to not rely on Adsense as my main revenue stream a few months ago. With this change it wont be long until Adsense isn’t my main money maker I think. Currently though it still represents over 50% of my daily earnings.

An update - abeit late

Its time .. err passed time for an update.

Things on the affiliate front is picking up after a slow start due to other commitments. A mini-site has been started and currently awaiting for Google to approve the PPC campaign. To be honest, not much research was done on it and its a popular niche - Zunes to be exact. Let me see how it turns out before I post more about that one.

Having some fun with publisher network referrals, mainly from this site actually. My referrals are growing everyday and the beauty of it is that the revenue from most programs lasts for a year. Yesterday I think it was near USD20 but that included a bulk one from Clicksor which basically compresses an approved accounts referral fees in one lot that was accumulated during the approval process.

All in all I think its still over USD10 a day steady and growing. Its also fun to see how your referrals are doing.

WidgetBucks - A Giant Step

Recently WidgetBucks has been smacked left right and center by parts of the webmaster community due to their buggy start, high expectations and bold claims.

I posted my doubts on WidgetBucks a month ago but reserved my judgement.

Yesterday, they finally posted the October 07 earnings for webmasters to see which I thought was a great step in the right direction.

However, it was the development today which makes me feel the Internet Marketer’s new wonderboy has finally grown of age - They are now posting real time referral earnings.

Google downs PR on all DCs

Disturbing news indeed as webmasters over at DigitalPoint gets a bit concerned in this thread.

All the PR checker tools are reporting N/A for their sites, enough to give any webmaster cause for concern. Personally, I think its just a temporary thing though and for those that are worried about their site, our trusty old PageRank Verification Tool is still working. So go over and get your dose of Google’s green juice if you need.

If Google is thinking of killing showing of External PageRank though, what would that mean?

Hundreds, no Thousands …. millions? .. or directory owners will turn grey overnight. SEOs will be drowned in calls from their clients.Text Link Ads wont know what to base their prices on anymore… and most devastating of all … our trusty PR verification tool would be useless!!!!!

Thats bad …

Got traffic from John Chow today!

Yep, checked my stats and definitely traffic from John Chow’s blog.

Looking closer there was something else in with the referrer URL …

http://widget.blogrush.com/box.php?
f=XXXXXXXX&url=http%3A//www.johnchow.com/
&ref=&r=XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Oh well, no free lunch from Mr. Chow then and just the new BlogRush widget working as intended.

BlogRush has just improved their interface and removed over 10,000 blogs from their network to improve the quality. Thought I’d give it a go as it seems fun enough.

Its a Blog Syndication network, where you install their widget as per right hand column and you get credits for every view. These credits then allow your headline to be viewed on other blogs in your Blogrush category.

You also get credits for blogs you referred and also the but I like is their ‘rich gives to the poor’ type system where bonus credits are given to less popular blogs.

I’ll post more on my impressions on it later but for those that want to try it for themselves, be nice if you click on my referral link here .

Chitika’s in-line text ads in beta

Logging in to my Chitika account, just noticed that they have an in-line text ad program in BETA.

The programme is called Linx and works the same way as the other In-line text networks in our guide. Basically, you copy and paste their bit of code onto your webpage and the code will identify keywords that are relevant to Chitika’s Ads. It will link those words and mouseover of those links will have a pop-up window showing some details of the ad. If your visitor clicks through then you get some revenue.

The Internet and your Web site

The Internet is one of the greatest inventions in the past century because it allows people to have near unlimited choice. In the not so distant pass, say 10 years: -

  • If I wanted to look for information, I’d go to the Library and hope that they have the relevant books available
  • If I wanted to learn more about Bleach the Anime - I’d probably have to resort to badly researched magazines
  • I’d listen to the radio or watch MTV to catch on the latest songs waiting for one that I’d like
  • etc, etc …
  • Now, I can research myself to shortsightedness on any subject I want, download the latest Bleach episode minutes after it has aired in Japan and listen and buy music of any style at any time.

So, with the above in mind, why the need for your website - does it serve a purpose? Does it offer any benefits to the people that you are trying to reach?

  • If you are doing an information / content Web site, does the content provide something of value to your visitors?
  • If you are doing an affiliates datafeed mall - Does your mall enable your visitors to find their required products easier?
  • If you are doing a directory, are you frustrating your visitors by recommending them sub-standard websites?
  • In a market of choices, Web sites that don’t offer anything to their visitors wont have a place, so please have a coffee and think about the below question,

Is my Web site giving my visitors what they want?
